These large, bell-shaped copper candlesticks have been tinned to give them a silvery finish, possibly to emulate silver. These candlesticks would probably have flanked either sides of a mihrab (prayer niche) in a mosque. The use of candlesticks and hanging lamps near the mihrab is significant in Islamic spirituality. Pairs of monumental candlesticks were often made and given to mosques. Candlesticks are also found in mausoleums in Turkey. Today, you can still see large candlesticks in use in Turkish mosques although they may instead have been adapted to hold electric bulbs.
