Originally called Tiger Balm Gardens, Haw Par Villa was built on Pasir Panjang Road in 1937 by Aw Boon Haw, a prominent businessman and philanthropist who had set up the gardens with the intention of educating the public about Chinese culture. With that in mind, various sculptures and statues portraying themes from Chinese folklore and legend were erected and displayed prominently throughout Haw Par Villa.
