Headdress

This headdress is from the Mingakabau people in West Sumatra. It features floral and foliage motifs that are embossed onto the metal plate using techniques of repoussé and chasing. Dangling embossed floral pendants and conical-shaped accessories are also attached at the bottom of the headdress. Family wealth and heirlooms including jewellery are passed down through the female line, as the Minangkabau society is matrilineal. Minangkabau goldwork is noted for its repoussé and elaborate detailing.
