Another Woman

Born in 1951 in Singapore, Amanda Heng graduated from La Salle College of the Arts in 1988 and is one of the founding members of The Artists Village, the first artist-run alternative art space in Singapore. In 1993, she graduated from Curtin University of Technology with a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in sculpture. Since 1987, Heng has participated in exhibitions throughout the world, including Japan, the United States and Thailand. Heng’s works deal primarily with issues of self-identity and feminism, expressed through various mediums, including installation and performance art. In 2010, Heng was awarded the Cultural Medallion for her contributions to the arts scene. This installation explores Heng’s relationship with her mother, and is at the same time, a parallel investigation into the positioning of women within traditional Asian family structures. Through the contrasting of photographs of their naked bodies and items, Heng attempts to reconstruct the emotional bond between her mother and her.
