Jiang Zi Ya is a legendary figure in Chinese folklore, known for fishing with his rod and hook three feet above the water. A man of great wisdom, Jiang explained that his objective did not lie in fishing, but waiting for a good ruler for him to serve. Jiang's statue is one of many in Haw Par Villa, where Chinese legend was the dominant theme. Originally called Tiger Balm Gardens, Haw Par Villa was built by Aw Boon Haw in 1937. A prominent businessman and philanthropist, Aw had set up the gardens with the intention of educating the public about Chinese culture.
