This is a fertility ornament made of filigree in the shape of a gold fish, which symbolises abundance and wealth. It could have been sewn on a garment, or used as a decorative hanging. The Peranakan Chinese community in Indonesia is mainly found in the coastal city of Palembang and the north coast cities of Java. They were a migrant community and have also adopted many local Javanese practices.
