Let it be

Born in 1963, Chng Chin Kang graduated from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) in 1988, and received his master’s degree from University of Central England in Birmingham in 1996. Since his return from England, there has been a departure in style as Chng veers towards realist painting to depict his observations about Singapore society at large. He is best known for painting on printed linen, often using bedsheets instead of canvas. In 1998, Chng’s painting won the prestigious UOB Painting of the Year. Chng has since participated in many exhibitions in Singapore, Thailand and Japan. In this work, painted probably during or immediately after Chng’s graduation from NAFA, the interplay of hues and tones, and the two figures dancing in exultance emit a feeling of happiness and freedom, exemplifying the title, ‘Let it be’.
