Born in Singapore in 1955, Lim Tiong Ghee is a self-taught artist renowned for his abstract collages. He was Category Winner (Representational), UOB Painting of the Year Competition in 1984 with his ‘Reflection’ watercolour painting, and in 1989 Lim received the Competition’s Top Award for his wrapping paper collage ‘From the Turtledove’.The Istana, the official residence and office of the President of Singapore, commissioned this monumental triptych. The work is a celebratory statement of Lim’s maturity and confidence as an artist, able to create a large scale work that is complex in its layering of colours and shapes yet is not stifling and overbearing in appearance. There is a joyous sentiment emanating, an expressed pride in the abundance and beauty of the lushness portrayed. For this work, Lim returned to his favoured subject of flora and fauna of which there is an abundance in his home country, Singapore.
