Bamboo pen

The reed pen or 'qalam' is the traditional writing instrument used by Islamic calligraphers. However, the calligraphers would also use bamboo or carved wooden pens for writing larger scripts. Similar to the reed pen, one end of the bamboo pen would be cut into an angled nib for writing. One of the first lessons a student of Islamic calligraphy has to learn is to prepare his/her pen in this manner.
