Galaxy Series No. 42

Born in 1946 in Malaysia, self-taught painter and sculptor Thang Kiang How’s talent and community service is variously recognised, including: Singapore’s Public Service Medal (1981), Dr Tan Tsze Chor Award (1982), and Special Award, UOB Painting of the Year competition (1985, 1986 and 1987). Exhibiting nationally and internationally, Thang was also President of the Modern Art Society Singapore (1981-93).Within Thang’s ‘Galaxies’ series, exhibited at Singapore’s National Museum Art Gallery in 1989, two compositional arrangements are apparent. One grouping bursts with meteoric force from its squared parameters while the other remains orbiting securely within its own, again square, universe. Furthermore, in ‘Galaxy Series No. 183’ it is difficult to ascertain the focal point. Perhaps the viewer is invited to simply experience Thang’s wondrous, roiling awe. Whereas, for example, in the quieter ‘Galaxy Series No. 12’ the eye is drawn in, in tandem with the star’s flight through its galaxy.
