Born in 1954 in Singapore, Ng Yak Hwee is a graduate of Singapore’s former Nanyang University (Botany major). An accomplished painter and sculptor, Ng received the 1987 Silver Medal from the Salon des Artistes Français, and won First Prize (Figurative category) in the 1992 UOB Painting of the Year Competition.Growing up in the nearby River Valley Road area, Goh has many childhood memories of visits made to Chinatown. Here, he has sought to combine certain images selected from his memory with an artist’s eye for composition. The work does not seek to accurately portray an existing scene or location, rather it is a composite of a number of elements Goh would have observed during his visits: poles of laundry extending from windows, rows of shop houses, trishaws, etc. He has reduced them to semi-abstracted shapes and repetitive lines, blending the unique qualities of collaging and paint to great effect.
