Lee Boon Ngan, a graduate from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in 1965, is the wife of Singapore’s second generation artist Chua Mia Tee who is known for his realistic paintings. She is a life member of the Singapore Art Society and an active participant in their annual shows.In the early years of practice, Lee, who is known for her realistic depictions of different floral species, drew flowers as part of still life arrangements. However, a stylistic breakthrough came in the late 1980s as she began to paint them in their natural outdoor environment, as portrayed in this work in the SAM collection. In 1991, her painting ‘Vanda Miss Joaquim’ was presented to the President of Philippines Mrs Corazon Aquino as an official gift.
