Born in Ninh Binh, Tran Luu Hau (b.1928) graduated from the Resistance Fine Arts School in Viet Bac in 1953. He then attended the V. Surikov Moscow State Academy Art Institute, a division of the USSR Academy of Fine Arts from 1956 to 1962. Hau began experimenting in abstraction in the 1960s and since the transformation of the Vietnamese economy, he has been a strong advocator of Abstract Expressionism, and is known for his expressionist renditions of still-life paintings and landscapes. Using bold, fast and energetic strokes, Hau depicts what looks like an alley. Unlike the warm browns and sombre blacks of his earlier landscape paintings, the vibrant red in this work creates a dynamic composition.
