These stands feature Mao’s poem on Shaoshan. Shaoshan in Hunan province was the birthplace of Mao and where he spent his early years. This made it a popular subject for ceramics and badges. The houses seen on this ornament are a reference to Mao’s childhood home in Shaoshan. During the Cultural Revolution, Shaoshan became a pilgrimage site visited by millions of Chinese.
