This altar cloth reflects the hybrid nature of Peranakan art. The Chinese practised decorating the front of their ancestral altar tables with a cloth with appropriate designs, and most of the ones made in China were of embroidery work with silk or cotton threads. This piece maintains its link to Chinese traditions through its function and its choice of motifs. Yet its made with the batik method, one more associated with the local Indonesian culture.
