This set of eight woodblock-cum-painted prints known as Niulang zhinu nianhua narrates the story of the romance between the cowherd, Niulang and the weaver, Zhinu. It was painted by Shandong’s famous atelier, Yang Liuqing. The quality is comparable to those in the collection of St. Peterburg’s Hermitage, which were collected during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.These woodblock prints are part of the illustrative history of the traditional Chinese drama that became a highly popular subject matter in folk art during the Qing dynasty(1644-1911)
