The interior of the Singapore Swimming Club

The photograph depicts the interior of the Singapore Swimming Club. Founded in 1893, the Singapore Swimming Club was restricted to only Europeans right upto 1963. A clubhouse, as shown in the picture, along with a swimming pool were built in 1931 at Tanjong Rhu. However, the swimming area in front of the club had to be encircled with steel fences as the waters off Tanjong Rhu were shark-infested. The Singapore Swimming Club was shifted inland after the government carried out reclamation works at the East Coast in the 1970s.
