The political play, The Lady Of Soul And Her Ultimate ‘S’ Machine was originally written by local playwright Tan Tarn How in 1992. The story revolves around a civil servant named Derek who is tasked with searching a ‘Lady of Soul’. Derek encounters an arts activist, a communist and a mamasan in the process of searching for the ‘Singapore’s soul’. Due to some sexual contents, the play was once banned. The debut was only made in 1993 after passing a test-case of new drama vetting procedures implemented by the National Arts Council. In 2009 a remake of the play with more multimedia effects added was directed by Casey Lim, another theatre veteran and staged by graduating students from the National University of Singapore theatre studies programme.
