May Wong taught the girls in Po Leung Kuk (Office to Protect Virtue) how to sew. Needlework samplers such as these were a popular way of teaching girls the different stitches needed for sewing and repairing clothes. The Po Leung Kuk girls also embroidered handkerchiefs and towels for sale.
