Pickled tea box

Known as lahpet ok, this compartmentalised circular box was used to serve lahpet (pickled tea) — chopped tea leaves soaked in brine and sesame oil with fried garlic, sesame seeds, nuts, roasted beans, and dried shrimps. Besides being a stimulant like the betel nut, the partaking of lahpet is significant because lahpet was sent out to friends and relatives to announce important events, such as a child’s name-giving ceremony, and death in the family. In addition, one is obliged to turn up at such occasions upon acceptance of the lahpet. In the civil law court, the partaking of pickled tea symbolises willingness to accept the court’s decision.
