Situated on the Observatory Hill of Shimla, the Viceregal Lodge (also known as the ‘Rashtrapati Niwas’) used to be the residence of the Viceroy of India, Lord Dufferin. The architecture of the building is in Scottish style and the construction materials mostly comprise local woods like pine and cedar. Significant historical events such as the Simla Conference of 1945 that paved the way for Indian independence and the 1947 decision to partition British India took place in this building.
