In a traditional Wayang Wong performance, actors wear masks known as wayang gedong or wayang topeng, its themes revolving round the kingdom of Jenggala of the 12th and 13th century. More specifically, it told the love story between a princess and the crown prince of Jenggala. Wayang Wong was originally performed only to an aristocratic audience in the palaces of Yogyakarta and Surakarta. Over time, however, Wayang Wong became a popular form of performing art among the common folks.
