The Singapore Botanic Gardens has a rich history that can be traced back to 1822 when Sir Stamford Raffles originally built an experimental garden on Government Hill, or Fort Canning Hill. The present site at Tanglin was first developed in the 1860s as a public park, but the Gardens was also known as the centre of the rubber boom of the early 20th century.
