With their cooking pots tied to the poles, such itinerant hawkers, or 'travelling cookshops', were a common sight during the late 19th and early 20th century. Selling drinks and vegetables, cobbling, pulling rickshaws and even telling fortunes were some of the other street occupations the poor and illiterate took up to earn a living.
