Cecil Street was named after Sir Cecil Clementi Smith, the Governor of the Straits Settlements. It was built on reclaimed land. Tanjong Pagar is Malay for ‘cape of stakes’. Anson Road was named after Colonel Archibald Anson, Lieutenant-Governor of Penang and a Major-General in Singapore.
