A funeral procession marks the beginning of the end of a traditional Chinese funeral ritual as the hearse is moved to the crematorium, or graveyard during the early 20th century. The hearse is followed by the deceased's family, who in those days observed the mourning custom of wearing traditional sackcloth with hoods as a sign of filial piety and respect. They are also accompanied by a band of musicians, whose music is meant to ward off evil spirits around the funeral procession.
