Born in 1954 in Singapore, potter Jessie Lim started her formal pottery studies in 1982 at Dartmouth College, followed by courses in New York City, at Rhode Island School of Design and at Anderson Ranch Centre, USA. In 1988, Lim was the first local woman potter to stage a solo exhibition held at the then National Museum Art Gallery, Singapore. In 2000, the Singapore Art Museum made their first acquisition of Lim’s work for their permanent collection. This work was included in the ‘Jessie Lim 2004’ exhibition held at The Substation, Singapore. The 2004 exhibition marked the transition of Lim’s exploratory pottery from the functional to the sculptural. Her previous show in 2000 still included functional ware, but already her ‘orbs’ and ‘spires’ were present. With these new works Lim’s focus is on the simple sculptural form with subtle variations in black and white glazes, and texture.
