Places

While younger residents of Ang Mo Kio know the building as Broadway Plaza, older residents may remember it as Broadway Cinema—the first in a group of four cinemas that operated in Ang Mo Kio.

In the 1980s and 1990s, four cinemas—Broadway Cinema, Ang Mo Kio Cinema, Jubilee Cinema, and New Town Cinema—began operating in Ang Mo Kio New Town Central. Broadway Cinema, which opened on October 1979, was the first that was built among the group of four cinemas.

The $3.5 million, 1,261-seat cinema complex was developed and managed by the Cathay Organisation, one of the largest companies in the cinema sector in Singapore. The screens and Dolby sound system at Broadway Cinema were fitted by Electronic & Engineering Pte Ltd, a local engineering company which had worked with the Cathay Organisation for most of its cinema development.

Change of hands

The Cathay Organisation operated the cinema until the late 1990s when Golden Village took over. Broadway Cinema continued to provide cheap and convenient access to popular Hong Kong and Hollywood movies for the residents of Ang Mo Kio. Movie-goers would head to the nearby Ang Mo Kio Central Food Centre for snacks after a movie.

In the late 1990s, Broadway Cinema ceased to operate. It was the last of the four cinemas to close. The building was sold for $9 million and was developed into a mixed-use commercial development building known as Broadway Plaza. At the time of writing, Lian Beng Construction Pte. Ltd owns Broadway Plaza.
