This pillbox was one of a network of pillboxes that provided overlapping and interlocking fields of fire to defend Flagstaff House which was used as the Combined Operations Headquarters of the British Army.

This pillbox was possibly built either as part of the British preparation for a war in Singapore, or for the defence of Sime Road Camp during the Japanese Occupation. This defensive structure was located inland within Sime Road Camp, and positioned to protect it. The internment camp first housed military Prisoners-of-War and later, civilians, including high-ranking European civil servants and their families.
