This leaflet, issued by the left-wing Singapore Association of Trade Unions (SATU), rallied opposition to Singapore’s proposed terms of merger with Malaysia ahead of the signing of the Malaysia Agreement on 9 July 1963. It criticised the People’s Action Party (PAP)’s merger plans as a betrayal, warning of continued British influence, curtailed citizenship rights, economic risks, and limited political autonomy.Formed in 1961 after a split within the PAP and the dissolution of the Singapore Trades Union Congress, SATU aligned with the Barisan Sosialis and became a key platform for militant labour activism. Its leaders were detained during Operation Coldstore in 1963, and the organisation was dissolved the same year. While the PAP government promoted merger as vital for independence and economic survival, the union proved short-lived, with deep ideological and political chasms eventually leading to Singapore’s separation from Malaysia in 1965.
