The cPass™ SARS-CoV-2 Neutralisation Antibody Detection Kit was a world-first innovation that revolutionised COVID-19 antibody testing. Developed through a collaboration between Duke-NUS Medical School (led by Prof Wang Linfa and Dr Tan Chee Wah), GenScript Biotech Corporation, and the Diagnostics Development Hub hosted by A*STAR, the test enabled the detection of neutralising antibodies — antibodies that block viruses from infecting cells and indicate immune protection - without the use of live virus samples or high-containment laboratories. Unlike conventional antibody tests that only indicate prior exposure to the virus, cPass provided insight into a person’s level of immune protection. This breakthrough meant a test that was safer, faster and accessible to any standard laboratory worldwide. cPass™ received provisional authorisation from Singapore's Health Sciences Authority in May 2020. The kit’s impact extended globally after receiving US FDA emergency use authorisation in November 2020. It became an essential tool for assessing immunity in recovered patients, evaluating vaccine effectiveness in clinical trials, and conducting population studies amongst both humans and animals to understand the spread of COVID-19.The successful partnership between academic researchers, commercial manufacturers and government agencies demonstrated Singapore’s ability to rapidly develop solutions for global health crises. Since then, the cPass™ platform has been adapted for use with emerging variants and other viruses, underscoring its lasting contribution to infectious disease management worldwide.
