This is a photograph of Singapore Malay poet Masuri bin Salikun (Masuri SN) with fellow teacher-writer Munir Ali (Rosmera). In August 1950, both men would join 17 others to be co-founders of Angkatan Sasterawan’50 or ASAS’50, one of Singapore’s earliest Malay literary organizations in the post-World War II period. One of the key slogans by the organization is “Seni Untuk Masyarakat” (Art for the People), where the arts and especially literature is looked upon as a tool for social change. While Masuri SN focused on poetry, Rosmera tended to write novels. Some of his works included Perempuan Berbaju Hijau (The Lady in Green). He also became Department Head of Malay Language at Stamford College, Singapore; and lectured on Malay literature at Ann College, Singapore.
