Photograph of Abdul Samad Ismail with Lee Kuan Yew

This photograph of Abdul Samad Ismail with Lee Kuan Yew in the background was likely taken during the 1950s, when the journalist and co-founder of Malay literary organization Angkatan Sasterawan’50 (or ASAS’50) was still part of the People’s Action Party (PAP), of which he was a co-founder. He soon moved to Malaysia in 1959, where he helped set up The New Straits Times and Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (Institute of Language and Literature).
