His first poetry anthology, Awan Putih, was published in 1958; he would continue to regularly write and publish his poems since then, even as he held on to a full-time job as a Malay teacher and later on principal of Tanah Merah Besar Primary School. Some of the schools he taught at included Sepoy Lines Malay School formerly at Outram, and his colleagues included the musician Yusnor Ef. The Malay-medium school was phased out and closed down by the 1970s, when it was merged with Park Road School.
