This memo was issued by Utusan Melayu Press, then still headquartered at 185 Cecil St, to Singapore Malay poet Masuri SN in 1951 to notify him that he would receive a $5 fee for his submission to the upcoming Utusan Zaman issue. Utusan Zaman was a weekly newspaper owned by Utusan Melayu Press, which began publication in 1939. Unlike the daily newspaper Utusan Melayu, Utusan Zaman also published caricatures and satire, in addition to informative articles and literary works.Earlier in August 1950, Masuri SN had co-founded Angkatan Sasterawan’50 (or ASAS’50) with several other Malay journalists, teachers and writers including Keris Mas, Usman Awang, Mohd Latiff Mohd and Jamil Sulong. The organization believed in the function of art for the betterment of society, encapsulated in their slogan “Seni Untuk Masyarakat”, and works by its members tended to lean towards social realism.
