This book presents the importance of toilets through Jack Sim’s work towards the global sanitation agenda. It is based on an extensive interview with Sim. Sim's impact has been profound and far-reaching. His advocacy through the World Toilet Organization that he founded led to Singapore tabling its very first independent resolution at the United Nations (UN) on 24 July 2013 titled “Sanitation for All”. This was passed by consensus and led to the unanimous adoption by 193 UN member states of 19 November as the designated UN World Toilet Day, bringing global attention to the sanitation crisis. As one of the key members who convened the Sustainable Sanitation Alliance, composed of key players in the sanitation space, Sim has helped coordinate global efforts in this field. His exceptional work has earned him numerous prestigious accolades, including the Schwab Foundation award for Social Entrepreneur of the Year, election as a Fellow of Ashoka: Innovators for the Public in 2007, Queen Elizabeth's Points of Light Award, Singapore Green Plan 2012 Award by the National Environment Agency (NEA) in 2004, and recognition as one of Time Magazine's Heroes of the Environment in 2008. In recognition of his contribution to humanity, he received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow UK in 2022.
