This is a poster for a documentary film featuring Jack Sim, who has come to be known as “Mr. Toilet” for his advocacy towards improving global sanitation conditions. The documentary is part of Sim’s efforts towards breaking the taboo and silence around sanitation issues through the use of playful humour, particularly in rural areas around the world. It premiered at the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival in 2019 and won the Scotiabank Docs For Schools Student Choice Award there. It was also named the Award This! Socially Relevant Documentary in 2020. Sim is a Singaporean entrepreneur who after building a successful business empire in his younger years, pivoted to social causes in his forties, founding multiple influential organisations including the Restroom Association of Singapore in 1998, the World Toilet Organization (WTO) in 2001, and the Bottom of the Pyramid (BoP) Hub in 2011. His decision to focus on toilets and sanitation was driven by the recognition that poor sanitation affects billions of people worldwide, yet this remains a taboo subject that receives insufficient attention from governments and international organisations. Through these platforms, Sim has worked tirelessly to break the silence around toilet issues and advocate for improved sanitation as a fundamental human right. Through the BoP Hub and other initiatives, he also works towards a reduction in global poverty. On 24 July 2013, Sim's advocacy led to Singapore tabling its very first independent resolution at the United Nations (UN) titled “Sanitation for All”. This was passed by consensus and led to the unanimous adoption by 193 UN member states of 19 November as the designated UN World Toilet Day, bringing global attention to the sanitation crisis affecting over 2 billion people who lack access to safely managed sanitation. As one of the key members who convened the Sustainable Sanitation Alliance, composed of key players in the sanitation space, Sim has helped coordinate global efforts in this field. His exceptional work has earned him numerous prestigious accolades, including the Schwab Foundation award for Social Entrepreneur of the Year, election as a Fellow of Ashoka: Innovators for the Public in 2007, Queen Elizabeth's Points of Light Award, Singapore Green Plan 2012 Award by the National Environment Agency (NEA) in 2004, and recognition as one of Time Magazine's Heroes of the Environment in 2008.
