This book about Jack Sim’s life and work towards the global sanitation agenda covers his journey, values, details of major initiatives, and the impact of his work. Sim's impact has been profound and far-reaching. His advocacy through the World Toilet Organization that he founded led to Singapore tabling its very first independent resolution at the United Nations (UN) on 24 July 2013 titled “Sanitation for All”. This was passed by consensus and led to the unanimous adoption by 193 UN member states of 19 November as the designated UN World Toilet Day, bringing global attention to the sanitation crisis. As one of the key members who convened the Sustainable Sanitation Alliance, composed of key players in the sanitation space, Sim has helped coordinate global efforts in this field. His exceptional work has earned him numerous prestigious accolades, including the Schwab Foundation award for Social Entrepreneur of the Year, election as a Fellow of Ashoka: Innovators for the Public in 2007, Queen Elizabeth's Points of Light Award, Singapore Green Plan 2012 Award by the National Environment Agency (NEA) in 2004, and recognition as one of Time Magazine's Heroes of the Environment in 2008. In recognition of his contribution to humanity, he received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow UK in 2022. Sim believes that he has been able to achieve such great impact because of the quality of gumption, that was inspired in him by his mother and by Singapore’s first prime minister Lee Kuan Yew. He wrote this book partly in response to recent developments in technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), which are changing the landscape of work. To prepare the future workforce of Singapore for the age of AI, Sim has started workingon a “Gumption” curriculum for schools based on this book that is intended to cultivate students’ soft skills such as curiosity, courage, compassion, commitment, communication, collaboration, community building, and calmness, all of which are amply demonstrated through Sim’s anecdotes in the book.
