These stamps commemorate the UN World Toilet Day, which was designated after sanitation advocate Jack Sim’s work led to Singapore tabling its very first independent resolution at the United Nations (UN) on 24 July 2013 titled “Sanitation for All”. This was passed by consensus and led to the unanimous adoption by 193 UN member states of 19 November as the designated UN World Toilet Day, bringing global attention to the sanitation crisis affecting over 2 billion people who lack access to safely managed sanitation. These stamps, designed by British paper sculpture illustrator Gail Armstrong, depict three key ways toilets, water, and hygiene add value to our lives and society. They are issued in U.S. dollars, Swiss francs and Euro. The United Nations is the only organisation in the world which is neither a country nor a territory that is permitted to issue postage stamps, and can do so in the above three different currencies. Its stamps reflect the organisation’s work and bring greater attention to world issues and the UN’s goals.
