This is a photograph of the Tan family from Guxi, Jieyang outside the Tan Si Chong Su Temple. Clan associations played an active role in Singapore’s Chinese community helping new migrants to settle in Singapore. These associations could be organised around geographical origin or lineage, organising religious events or providing welfare services for members. This photograph shows an association based around the lineage from a specific location, the Tan family from the Guxi, Jieyang. The photograph was likely taken after a religious event was held for these members in the Tan Si Chong Su Temple. The donor’s father Mr Tan Swee Gim is standing in the centre, dressed in a suit coloured black.
