This set of miniature medals comprises the 1939–1945 Star, Pacific Star, 1939–1945 War Medal, and 1945 Defence Medal, attached to ribbon bars. The medals commemorate David Marshall’s (1908-1995) wartime service in the Straits Settlements Volunteer Force (SSVF) before and during the Japanese invasion of Singapore, where he was interned in Changi Prison and later sent to a forced labour camp in Hokkaido, Japan. Marshall was Singapore’s first elected chief minister from April 1955 to June 1956.
