This brooch is inlaid with 61 diamonds. It features the plumage of a Bird of Paradise, arranged in a densely patterned floral spray. The design interprets a kerosang (fastener), which is typically worn in sets of three to secure a baju panjang (knee-length open jacket). The brooch was designed by Thomis Kwan and made by Lim Teck Ngian, one of the atelier’s craftsmen. A brooch of the same design was presented by Tony Tan, former president of Singapore, to Queen Elizabeth II for her Diamond Jubilee in 2012.Foundation Jewellers is a jewellery atelier from Singapore. Originally named Hai Suan Goldsmith, it was founded in 1976 by the late Kwan Chan Yew, a migrant from Canton (Guangzhou), China. Kwan began his career as a goldsmith on North Bridge Road and later set up his own shop in Katong, a popular location for Peranakan businesses. Today, the company is run by Kwan’s son Thomis Kwan and his wife Caroline Tay. It is known for producing handcrafted Peranakan jewellery in early 20th-century styles. The shop relocated to Orchard in 1987 and is home to an in-house metalsmithing workshop with craftsmen who work exclusively for Foundation Jewellers.
