Autumn at Home is set within the interior courtyard of a traditional Baghdadi home, with tall windows and the colonnade overlooking the space below, shrouded in the shadow of a tree shedding its leaves in what is supposedly the autumn transition. With the composition of the narrow canvas, the viewer is placed within the shadowed foreground of the painting, drawn to the turning leaves that have fallen. With its large, almost life-like scale, the viewer is made to look up at the home out of reach, which is painted in a similar orange, eliciting the sense of a hazy Autumn sun. The notion of home is a recurring subject for Sami, drawing from his experience and memory of displacement throughout his life. Painting to evoke mood and atmosphere, Sami is known for his visual language, which exposes the inextricable tie between memory and forgetting. He often paints fragments of images that create an ambiguous space of revelry, rather than single points of focus. Though at first serene, Autumn at Home, largely covered by shadows creates an unease in its deliberate obfuscation of the surrounding exteriors and the interior of the home through blacked-out windows, revealing only a portion of the building’s façade and the leaves, with the full picture lost to time and left to the imagination of the viewer.
