This coffee pot with raised scrolling floral motifs is an example of what is often classified as ‘Riau silver’. Despite its name, its areas of production was not limited to the Riau and Lingga islands, but also included Singapore and Johor. Unlike Malay silver from the peninsula, ‘Riau silver’ is marked not with the silversmith’s initials or location, but with a chased emblem of a drawn keris crossed over its scabbard. Moreover, the silversmiths working on these wares were not only Malays but also Chinese, many of whom were equally extant in the Straits. Even with the introduction of new European-inspired tableware typologies, motifs and techniques characteristic of conventional Malay silverware were often incorporated to continue catering to demands for Malay-looking silverware.
