This set of pierced silver buttons were likely intended to complement the male baju Melayu, including the cekak musang variant which generally requires between 5 to 7 buttons. These buttons would be pinned through the button flaps, with the top-most button resting in between the clavicles. In terms of motifs, although the design is based on floral patterns, its composition is less informed by conventional Malay patterns and resemble more the floral plaques found in European accessories for menswear – hinting not just at changing tastes in Malay fashion amongst male aristocrats, but perhaps also evolving techniques of Malay silversmiths in accommodating to such new demands.
