These gilded silver beads are often known as buah hara (lit. fig) and tend to be attached to the ends of scarves worn over the shoulder as additional adornment, through which other articles such as celpa (tobacco boxes) or even perfume box can be strung through. This set of beads in particular features 3 different types of varying sizes, including filigree beads, and were previously owned by Alwyn Haynes, the former British Resident of Perak (1925) and British Advisor of Kedah (1925) and Kelantan (1930). For such colonial officials, it was unlikely such beads were acquired and utilized in their original manner, but rather as part of curio collecting during their career stints in Malaya.
