This is a lithograph of a Neptune’s Cup, a type of sea sponge native to Southeast Asia. It was created by W. H. Baily who based his work on a specimen in the Bristol Institution. The first description of the Neptune’s Cup was given on 13 November 1819 by Major-General Thomas Hardwicke at a meeting of the Asiatic Society in Calcutta. This specimen was found off the coast of Singapore although it was not stated who collected this specimen. This species was thought to be extinct in 1912 due to overfishing and dredging of the seabed, but several populations of the Neptune’s Cup have been found around Southeast Asia since 2011. In this document, the Neptune’s Cup was given a scientific name of Alcyonium poculum but is now referred to as Cliona patera.
