This is a Telecoms envelope and letter issued by its Telex/Telegraph Operations Department to a client, acknowledging the completion of the Local Urgent Mail (LUM) and Speedpost customer survey. The design of the company’s signature was by Hengdesign Associates, as part of a broader corporate rebranding initiative in 1979.In response to the growing volume of mail in the 1970s, Singapore began expanding its postal infrastructure and modernising its operations. This period saw significant investments in building new postal facilities, upgrading sorting systems, and streamlining mail distribution processes. New technologies and methods were introduced by Telecoms to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and speed. One of which was Local Urgent Mail (LUM), a courier service introduced from 1 August 1977 to cater for the fast transmission and delivery of urgent correspondence and documents within Singapore. For a fee of $1.50 in addition to postage, users who opted for this service would have their mail delivered within 2.5 hours of the special scheduled collection times. Another service innovation was the launch of Speedpost in 1978, which aimed to provide a fast and reliable way to send documents internationally. Initially available to destinations like Hong Kong and Britain, it soon expanded to include the United States, Australia, and the Netherlands. Over time, Speedpost was extended to cover local deliveries, offering urgent, same-day courier services island wide.
