In the 1980s, postmen in Singapore collected mail from over 700 postboxes island-wide, bringing it to the Mails and Parcels Centre at Chai Chee Industrial Park for manual sorting. This khaki-coloured canvas mail bag was likely used to collect and transport mail within the facility before it was sorted by hand and delivered to recipients. It was used prior to the merger of the Postal Services Department with Telecoms in 1982.More than just a functional item, the mail bag offers a glimpse into the tools and routines that supported Singapore’s evolving postal system during a period of rapid economic and infrastructural growth. With demand for postal services soaring, postmen would spend the first three to four hours of each day meticulously sorting letters by beat, route and delivery sequence. This laborious process began to change in the late 1990s with the opening of a new, highly automated mail sorting centre along Eunos Road—today's SingPost Centre. Advanced machinery drastically reduced sorting time from hours to mere seconds. As automation took hold, the use of traditional mail bags like this one began to decline. By the 2000s, the rise of email further reduced the volume of physical mail.Once a staple of daily operations, this postal bag now stands as a quiet witness to a system in transition—from manual labour to mechanised speed, from paper to digital communication.
