The Hajj belt is generally worn by male Muslim pilgrims over the white ihram garments to hold them in place during their pilgrimage to Mecca. It was invented in Kampong Gelam, Singapore, in the early 20th century by Haji Yusof, who saw the need for a respectful and secure way for pilgrims to carry belongings during long sea voyages. His sturdy, lockable design became popular among Southeast Asian pilgrims and helped establish Singapore as a key hub for pilgrimage preparation. Even in its later iterations such as this piece, the Hajj belt remains a lasting symbol of religious devotion, practical innovation, and local craftsmanship.
